the girl who saved fontaine. condemned herself to a life of silent pain and suffering without any warning or preparation. she could confide in no one, seek out help from no one, all while bearing the weight of her entire nation on her shoulders. not only did her willpower save everyone in fontaine, but after the prophecy was averted, she was finally allowed to live a normal life.

Kiana Kaslana:

TLDR: she's kiana kaslana what do you MEAN!!!! kiana is a beautifully written character who fully encapsulates what hi3 is about and she's so full of love and guilt and (most importantly) hope. she's a clone who struggles with her own identity/inhumanity and traumas extending from when she was a young child and her guilt but is so so resilient and so so so so compassionate which ultimately reinforces her humanity :)

kiana's character IS the honkai impact thesis statement. i don't even mean it as in she's the literal main character and face of honkai i genuinely mean it when i say she just IS honkai impact. she reflects every single theme that they portray [hope over nihilism (chapter 25 || the flame chasers and just. the previous era in general), having agency over your identity and your own story (himeko, her being k423 and being so linked to sirin, everlasting flames || the kaslana household name honestly, bronya, fu hua, mei, sirin), believing in the humanity's inherent worth (chapter 25, arc city || elysia <- important since as a current era herrscher, she is a successor to elysia AND as kiana kaslana, she is a narrative parallel of elysia), having faith in the youth (himeko, kevin || the other flame chasers! notably su), etc.] her character being so reflective is also sooooo OUGH to think about when you view it as a reflection of honkai's 50,000 year samsara because kiana is a representation of these themes coming full circle (especially since many of these stretch back to the previous era and elysia).

SHE FEELS SO MUCH. she's so full of love and guilt. she clearly prioritizes others over herself and part of her arc is her learning to value and love herself as well!!! she would give herself for the world ten times over because she holds so much affection for humanity!! (WHILE FEELING DEHUMANIZED BECAUSE OF HER IDENTITY AS BOTH A HERRSCHER AND K423) and it's actively apart of her character's growth :'')

dear god her growth… okok. so i think first you have to understand that a lot of kiana's growth obviously coincides w general maturity as she grows from a teenager to a young adult. but aside from that i think people often forget that younger kiana is incredibly self sufficient since her father literally left her with little to no explanation when she was like. what 8? the insecurity she feels at that! the anger she has to navigate while also balancing it with her own feelings of missing and loving him. basically: kiana has struggled a lot w instability and is thus kinda good at navigating it. ex: she isnt shaken by nagazora and literally tries again and again and again to save mei and convince mei to let her help. the thing is this fucks w her a bit though because a big thing that she does as a means to cope w instability is avoiding them (not reflective of real life of course, but in the fictional hi3 this is partially represented in kiana's repressed memories about her actual origins as k423). she can not stand the realization that she killed himeko that she's so deep in denial and doesnt truly realize it until more than 10 chapters after himeko dies! she's so horrified with her being a herrscher she actively tries to not use her powers out of fear, even when it puts her in harms way (the chapter XI-EX CG!!!!!! her literally trying to kill herself!!) she literally runs away from her friends and loved ones because she's so scared of hurting them!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! which is why her promise to himeko to not run away is so important!! because it addresses one of kiana's biggest flaws!!!!! this is especially important bc her refusal to continue her avoidance feeds into her arc during the herrscher of dominion chapters where she both faces her own guilt/identity and deliberately chooses perseverance and hope over nihilism!! she is hope!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

person who is sooooo normal about ray talks about the end of episode 10, what it confirms, what it introduces, and what it may even promise:

"can you please forgive me?"

starting off with this line.... there is a specific brand of betrayal and hurt reserved for the people who feel like the only ones in the world that can make you feel loved. we've seen ray get angry and even lash out at the other characters before but we haven't seen him breakdown the way he did in the sandray apartment fight. i think i took ray saying that he finally was starting to understand his feelings more in episode 9 too lightly, because it seems he meant more then just "i think i like you too" kind of thing, i wouldn't be surprised if ray realized the love he felt as well, and not just romantic love but the "you've seen so much of the ugliness in me but still stayed" kind of love and, if im gonna be bold, acceptance.

"you can be angry or hate me all you want"

lines like this tell me two things, the first being the guilt ray feels over the way he treats people and the second being how much pain he thinks he deserves for it. though i will say this time it feels different then in episode 4 where ray asks sand to call him a burden, because before he wanted sand to hurt him back (a bit of retaliation a bit of self-harm even) but this time he is asking for sand's understanding and forgiveness. he still thinks he deserves it, but now its more then just asking for someone to hurt you in order to reconcile (we will get to the fact sand isn't really there don't worry) there is a sort of emotional growth is what im trying to say.

"i know now that you want nothing from me"

this is also such a huge line for me. we know ray views himself as worthless, he would rationalize why anyone would want him (this is why he was so hurt about sand accepting money from his dad but that's already been meta'd to death so i won't get into that), so him not only thinking but verbalizing that sand is someone who is kind to him without expecting anything in return is huge for ray's ability to see himself as more than a burden or his father's money. in fact, i'd say him admitting this here means he is already beginning to gain a sense of self-worth.

"though i've been nothing but an asshole to you, you are always there for me"

this is the part where we really see ray break. im not good at reading other people's emotions so im not gonna comment on what emotions the actor is trying to portray (tho he is portraying some big ones goddamn), from a text stand point, im interpereting this as pain. I talked before a bit about guilt but i'd say at this moment the realization that someone can care for him so deeply that the parts of himself he's sure are not only unlovable but hurtful won't drive them away, causes him a lot of pain. as someone who is bad feeling cared for or appreciated as a person and sometimes acts like a dick about it, i too would break apart at this moment.

"please understand me"

now this is the line that inspired this post in the first place. he struggles with the connections he has with others but you can see how lonely this man is. like he has been told he is a burden, he interperets his life events and the way other people treat him as proof he is fundamentally unlovable and bad luck for anyone he gets close to, and he is a self-fulfilling prophecy about it.

when he asks sand to understand him he's asking sand to look deeper then his self-sabotoging and attachment issues and see the love and care he has that he struggles to understand and feel and express. he is filled with so much pain how could it not start to infect everyone around him, but from what we see of him, he probably never wanted to hurt other people in this way to begin with.

i think the reason this line specifically broke my heart is that, so much of his behavior at times can be interpreted as a subconscious cry for help, help he won't except but help he needs anyway. i knew any arc involving ray addressing his addiction would destroy me because there is the pain experiencing the things i mentioned above, the pain in thinking you're helpless to them, and then the pain in doing what it takes to try to move forward from them, like this shit is hard. the clarity ray is able to adress imaginary sand with is so incredible even though its in his head, especially given how stubborn he'd been about admitting any issues in the first place.

"being with me requires some patience"

all that i said above and more... i don't think ray will get over that feeling of being a burden any time soon if he ever does because it becomes so ingrained in your worldview and the way you interpret other people's behavior. i like the way this line is phrased (i know its a translation but still) because it alludes to him feeling that he is capable of being loved, it'll be hard but not impossible.

"but if you don't want to put up with me anymore, that's alright. i get you"

remember how i just said i think he now believes he's lovable... well actually i still mean it. he's been constantly told and shown how his behaviour and mentality are hard to deal with, like he thinks his existence is so burdensome it killed his own mother BUT he now knows sand is different. he won't blame sand for not wanting to deal with him, he's always been aware of his shortcomings but can now honestly address the effect his actions have on others, and at the same time he knows that its possible to care for him.

this is why i think sand is his motivation for going to rehab, he's shown ray what is possible for him in ways no one else before sand has.

"but please know this"

there is something so special about the impact sand has had on ray that i think goes beyond their relationship. sand made ray see the value in having a future, in being loved, in being happy. in episode 8 ray tells sand that he's finally happy when they spend time together, and it may seem like he's repeating it here but again this sand is imaginary. he's not saying this to get sand to answer his texts or hang out with him. he's imagining his reason for wanting to recover from addiction. like the weight this scene carries at least triples for me everytime i remember sand isn't really there. this was such a beautiful choice to make imo like ray saying these things to sand would probably be good for their relationship but it wouldn't have the same impact on ray's character arc.

my conclusion is once again don't know why i rambled on besides, ray as character was manufactured in a lab to drive me insane. like i've triggered my mood disorder twice over the course of watching this show but i wouldn't take it back for even a second. i love ray, i love what we've seen of his mentality and backstory, i love that we're seeing him making the decision to address his addiction, i go numb with the thought of where his arc will go next, but i especially love seeing everyone come together to scream about this character that means so much to me (not at all subtle reference to the fact i've read hurt and grieve but don't suffer alone by @jgyapologism what three? times now) anyway hope we all continue to scream about him this week. 🫡🫡

there are many things wrong with this ep (like derek existing, and also his lines, and also yul existing,,, and the stuff ive pointed out) but its ONC. i'll throw them a bone ig. i'm okay with what we got, it obviously wasn't a masterpiece and it felt fanservice-y in parts (yk that one post or ask or whatever that says season 1 & 2 DSVC was a show a fandom was built off, but season 3 is a show built off the fandom? yea some scenes reminded me of that. coigh cough krystal mildly breaking the fourth wall.) but i'm glad connor only got like 2 seconds of screentime, fiore and alec got along, and the jajames crumbs oh my.. <3

overall, an 8/10 and if my memory isn't failing me this is probably the best rating since ep 13?? but yea it was a good episode i'm fine with it. im surprised they didnt ruin.everything. bc yk its ONC. so yea!!! yay yippee yay!

Besides her fear of commitment, Spy ran off when Scout was born because she had recently discovered that she was transgender. She didn't know if Scout's mom (im gonna use my hc name for her from here on out— Julie/Julianna) would be approving and didn't want to hurt Julie because she knew she probably wouldn't love her anymore (newsflash, she still would). Spy knew she deserved better, so she ran, but she never really went far. She simply moved to New York (Albany— or Salem, i like that better), where she could still keep an eye on them.

Of course, she traveled all the time for her assassination jobs, but every now and then she would visit Boston, walking down the street of their home in a different disguise each time. She did get to watch Scout grow up, but from afar. It hurt her every time she saw him alone. There were a couple of times she came by later at night (just to see if Julie had moved on to a new man), and saw her precious Jérémy sitting in the backyard all alone. In those moments, she wanted nothing more than to run up and embrace him, but she couldn't.

^^ (That could have been a reason she said, "You're stronger than you'll ever know, Jeremy," in the comics. She knew some of what he had been through by those check-ins.)

She was already working for Red a little before Scout was, and she begged Pauling to get him in discreetly. By the luck of whatever god was up there, it worked. It was her first time seeing her son face to face since he was just a baby, but she couldn't find it in her to tell him. She never could.

She did (eventually) reach back out to Julie, showing up at her doorstep one night and apologizing profusely. She had drunk a bit before she came, maybe a little more than she should have. Spy just had to dull the pain or she might die just looking into Julie's eyes. Julianna was rightfully upset, but she could see that Spy was genuinely distraught. She asked her to come inside and talk, as the boys weren't home then. Spy explained everything, leaving out the bits about who she really was, though she hinted at it here and there, but was too scared.

Julie saw right through that. She understood her immediately. Spy nearly exploded into tears when Julie told her that she would love her no matter who she was. She cried in Julianna's arms harder than she had ever cried before. Julie could also see that she was clearly a little drunk, and she didn't want to leave her alone in this kind of state, so she let her stay the night.

Even after that, Spy made Julie promise not to tell Jeremy. She had to be the one to tell him face to face, and she knew that. Spy held it off for years; she was terrified of how Scout would react. Would he be angry? God, she hoped not. Then they were fired, and she was so, so upset. It hurt her, God, why had she held off for so long? Now, what if she never got to tell him?

The comics took place (even though comic 7 doesn't exist, shhh), and once everything went back to "normal", she told him. Actually told him.

How Scout took it is up to interpretation. I have so many different ideas I couldn’t possibly explain them all (most of them are sooooo angsty btw. hurt no comfort type angst.)

in old lore, only Beltasians could feel attraction post-brand. but now, ANY of them can feel attraction, but Beltasians simply feel the most motivated by others they care about. (old lore was sooooo wip but i promise stuff is much more solid now KDGSJDGSJSGSJ)

however, due to the act of Being Branded, the way Vani experience love is oft painful and hard to grasp. "love" to them can be ANYWHERE from murderous (in the mindset of "killing the ones i love to help them escape the suffering of life"), to simply cuddly and soft and nice and normal, to somehow sexual despite the fact they have nothing to USE in that way, all the way to warped beyond belief into a way that we could never register as "love"- truly alien, both to us humans and to they the Kraizen.

TANGENT AGAIN. TLDR; yep. the only limit now is that they cannot reproduce in any way

Seonwoo is sooooo messy, I love it and hate it, he brings that drama but at what cost???? The way he kept teasing Junsung, GOD he’s so annoying I had to take a deep breath

this man. this fucking man. I don’t just wanna go out and say I can’t stand him but maybe I just do. idk. im also interested in him and the way he works even when those ways are so twisted, bc it’s like I can see where he’s come from and why he’s like this, a person that literally came out a week before the show in his 30s who has this outward persona and confidence and chatty and outgoing but he’s so unwilling to actually share his thoughts and feelings, it’s like I can see this huge void between what he presents and who he is and a need to please people mixed with who you are not being the normal thing people want seems to put all the puzzle pieces together.

that being said, it’s that thing of I can understand where you’re coming from and what your deal is but I can also objectively not like it. a reason is not an excuse, and when he sat with hyungjin and said I am what I am, that’s me, that changed my approach towards him then. before, I thought he needed someone to break through that exterior and help him take down that guard and get to the core of him, but now I’m more thinking ok that might be a part of it but I also don’t think how you behave is a mask, it’s part of you, and whatever you perceive yourself as, you don’t have a problem with, which makes things a bit easier for me bc now I don’t feel the need to reason his behaviour. his actions are his actions and I’ll see them now I see them.

so saying that… he’s a bitch. I don’t know if this is my roommates for endgame rose-tinted glasses, but his behaviour has bitchiness in it, the way he continually finds ways to bring up sungho to junsung, rub it in his face that he’s dated him while he hasn’t, it’s the hypocritical-ness of it all for me that’s the worst bc he said he’s uncomfortable in this love triangle situation continuously in ep 7, and yet he’s the one seeking out junsung to set themselves up as rivals. he’s the one at that table who called them rivals, and junsung is the one that said he doesn’t like competitiveness, doesn’t like tension. at this point, he seeks out junsung to talk about their rivalry more so than he seeks out sungho, the one he actually likes, to hang out with him. and I think I said in tags before, that this need to compete with junsung comes from jealousy and insecurity, bc he isn’t like junsung, and can’t bring himself to be. junsung is certain and steadfast and straightforward and bold and seonwoo can’t do any of that. he isn’t a person that can express himself that easily. and instead of explaining that difference to junsung and sungho, instead of seeing that difference, bc he sees it as an insecurity is why he twists it into this rivalry, a way to prove he can be all those things that junsung is, that he wants to be.

and it’s the way he acts this way, pushing this love triangle narrative, while still being the one talking to and keeping doors open to other people. like i can’t bear to watch yonghee anymore bc i adore him so much and I need seonwoo to cut that tie instead of keeping him tethered with this promise of id like to date you someday, bc when will the day come. I get that they haven’t had a chance, but so haven’t so many other people. so many of the pairs that are interested in each other, like sungho and junsung, like minsung and hyeongjun, haven’t dated, and yet their feelings and connections are strong. you don’t need a date for that, you can foster that in the house, and a date can then serve as a chance to check or affirm those feelings. seonwoo strings yonghee along like if only we had a chance to date, then I’d be able to see whether I’m interested or not, when they have had time, they’ve talked a lot, and I just want seonwoo to give him more than there’s maybe a chance of cut it off altogether bc he can know by now if there’s a feeling, he can give some indication of whether this is more than just returning kindness or feeling sorry or wanting to comfort him. and that maddens me, bc it keeps yonghee in this state of tunnel vision when there’s so many other people around him giving him kindness that he can’t see with those blinders on. but no, seonwoo will keep that flame alight only just while feeding into this love triangle and acting like he’s frustrated by it. like… dude if junsung wasn’t in the equation, you’d still be in a love triangle bc sungho is apparently not the only person you’re open to. you’d just be at the center of the love triangle, and is that what you want? this personality of being cowardly to share your feelings and make a move but instead wanting everyone to chase you and pursue you and have you at the center of everyone’s attention? I just can’t get behind that, that selfishness. and it makes me even more mad that he won’t acknowledge the fact that he’s a central figure in this house bc he has so many people interested in him and he won’t take on the responsibility of that place by properly addressing those interests. sungho has two people interested in him that he can’t decide between and it makes him feel stressed and awful. seonwoo had multiple people interested in him and he sleeps fine at night. it’s that difference that infuriated me, that he starts all these fires and won’t put any of them out. great for tv, great for drama, but as a person making decisions… nope.

and I think it’s very telling that hyungjin, his complete opposite, someone very honest with his feelings and straightforward that is still very personable… I think it’s very telling that I think he clocked onto him straight away. literally on their first date, the first time he met him, asking whether he was being nice to him out of affection or is he just nice to everyone. bc he saw that he is kind to a fault, to the point it purposefully obscures his true feelings and he very much said I’m not here for that, he’s off my list. and you saw that seonwoo gauged that and didn’t like it. he went to hyungjin and had it out bc he couldn’t handle someone not even not liking him, but not being interested in him, and I love that hyungjin told him straight. and sungho sees it now too and is getting mad at that constantly bright persona when he won’t sort out the situations he’s created. and I’m kinda like yes yes get mad and go find refuge in the calm and comfort of junsung pls.

bc the thing is I don’t want to see this as a rivalry. I want sungho to take time and make the decision himself bc he’s capable of that. he’s a person, not a prize, and he can like who he likes. but what got me was him saying he just wanted to go, get out and have fun, get away from the house and the drama of it. and that is drama that seonwoo has maybe not created but absolutely fostered, and made bigger (bc look at how comparatively less tense and heated the minsung love triangle is… which ofc seonwoo has to stick his nose into), and it’s junsung that says he wants to go and have fun too. it’s those things that keep affirming in me that sungho would find that kind of happiness with junsung. and I think the best thing for seonwoo is for him to be knocked down a peg or two, and have a good long look in the mirror and realise how hypocritical his behaviour is.

vernon is a nomad because he has basically lost every family he has known (his biological one, his adoptive one, etc.). vernon was given up for adoption as a baby by a couple who were unable to give him the life he deserved, so a close friend of his mother promised to raise him as their own. his nomad family was part of a small clan, removed from the seven nations that inhabit the NUSA and were located north were modern day vegas is. he grew up happy until he was about 18 when he was off working a seasonal job at some biotechnica plant, after the season was over, he returned to find his whole clan had basically been slaughtered, only a few members remained who were also returning from their seasonal jobs. so vernon and the remaining nomads gathered what they could of their family to honor them and eventually joined the bakkers which is where his story starts at the beginning of cyberpunk!!! (damn sorry for that long ass dissertation 💀)
